Place names
On my mind, not to be forgotten
I’m not sure of the purpose of this list; it just seems important to me, especially as I try to broaden my view of American history.
I realized a few years ago that place names in Vietnam I learned from the nightly news when I was a child are probably unknown to generations following me. This is a list of names that have come to mind (with some help from Wiki).
I’ve limited this list to five (arbitrary) names per period, including a somewhat generic list of battles of the American West. Only wars/battles involving American military are included, which is why the London Blitz is not included in the And I skipped a few wars.
Seeing all these names at once does something to me.
Lexington. Concord. Valley Forge. Manhattan. Yorktown.
Antietam. Gettysburg. Shiloh. Andersonville. The Wilderness.
Washita. Wounded Knee. Sand Creek. Little Bighorn. Trail of Tears.
Chateau-Thierry. The Somme. Ypres. The Argonne. Verdun.
Normandy. St. Lô. The Bulge. Salerno. Berlin.
Midway. Guadalcanal. Iwo Jima. Okinawa. Tarawa.
Dresden. Tokyo. Hiroshima. Nagasaki. Kobe.
Heartbreak Ridge. Inchon. Pusan. Pork Chop Hill. Chosin.
Huẽ. Saigon. Tonkin. Pleiku. Ia Drang.
Beirut. Bahrain. Kandahar. Baghdad. Falluja.
